Looking Back ...

(High school and college Art)

Today I went through an old portfolio of mine that was damaged in our little flood in the basement. When I first saw the damaged portfolio my heart sank. I have held onto some of these pieces for over fifteen years and I really hoped I could salvage the art. When I opened the portfolio I was disappointed to see and smell the damage. As I went through the art I was transported through time and began thinking about the past. When a lot of people think about college they remember the best years of their lives, I don’t. College and my twenties were a blur of depression, hopelessness and medications.

( Sifting through all the wet and damaged Art.)

Looking back I think my struggle with depression began in junior high. I was terribly shy, kids were cruel and I could not seem to find myself. I always felt so awkward. As I went into high school things didn’t change much. I am not saying it was all bad, I had some great friends and had some amazing experiences but deep down I was always sad.

When I went away to college things got a lot worse. I was miserable and I progressively became sadder and sadder. When I was twenty it came to a head and I just wanted to die. I finally got the courage to go to a doctor and talk about was happening to me and how I was feeling. The next year my life was a blur of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and anti psychotics. I went through two psychiatrists, a therapist and several different diagnoses. I left school for a semester and when I was there I wasn’t. I was so absorbed in my illness and how horrible I was feeling.

(pastel still-life)

When I was twenty-two I gave up on medication and before I knew it I was madly in love and became pregnant with Noah. I dropped out of school, got engaged, bought a house, and became a mom all in a ten months. When I was pregnant with Noah I felt wonderful. I was physically sick but mentally I felt fabulous, I wasn’t depressed. When Noah was about two the depression came back and once again I was playing the medicine game. I always found it interesting how many different pills were shoved down my throat, three, four, five, different ones at a time. All doing different things all of them contradicting each other.

I finally hit a wall and gave up on medication and doctors completely. I think I just accepted I would always feel this way and it was how I was supposed to feel. When you don’t know anything else irritability, depression and anxiety seem like the norm. Life went on; I got pregnant with Abbey and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Within a year of having Abbey my relationship with my parents deteriorated and I watched in horror as their marriage fell apart. When you suffer from depression you are depressed not because of external problems it’s just because of how your brain works but when you add external factors to an already depressed brain the situation becomes beyond grim. I could not handle what was going on anymore and I was miserable, irritable and severely depressed. I was no longer a twenty year old college student wasting her life. I now had two happy energetic children and a loving husband. I could no longer live with self-pity and bring down the people I loved most in the world. I decided to try medication again. I decided to go to my family doctor and see what she suggested I try.

(figurative drawings)

We started with one medication, not three and it was a low dose that we slowly increased. The first time I realized I felt better was amazing. I took a deep breath and instead of feeling the weight of the world and dread I felt hope and carefree. Unfortunately I had to stop taking the medications because of a severe reaction, but for the first time I knew what it felt like to feel good. It’s been a year and a half since I started trying to find a medication match. About six months ago we found a combination that worked. It’s amazing not to be depressed, anxious or irritable all the time. I still have a bad day here and there; everyone does but it’s not because my brain is not working it’s because of something else. Life is clearer now, I know what I want, I know what is important, I want to surround myself with positive experiences and not dwell on the negative. When you can’t help being depressed and negativity is all you know that is one thing but when you purposely surround yourself with it, it is something completely different.

(portraits)

I wish I could go back to that eighteen year old girl going to college and talk to her. I would tell her not to take herself so seriously, not to become self absorbed with her illness, and go into getting help with an open mind. To create as much as possible, love as many people as possible, and experience everything she could. I would suggest getting help immediately, listen to and challenge her doctors and be proactive in her treatment.

(abstracts)

My twenties were filled with extremes, amazing highs and terrible lows. When I look at my life I have one regret and looking back at my waterlogged portfolio it made it very clear. I regret letting depression dictate my life. Not being depressed has let me see what I want in life and what I want for myself. I am so glad I decided to get help before I got any older, because not suffering from depression is the most amazing feeling in the world.

Some New and Different Art …

Things that make me happy, trying something new.

I have been quite busy the last few days working on some new pieces of art. My newest colored pencil and pastel drawings have been created on vintage book covers and then attached with nails to plywood. Each piece is unique and part of their uniqueness is due to the different textures that each cover created.

The first piece I did features a colorful rooster sitting on a hill of flowers. I like how the title of the book and its simple star decoration adds to the colored pencil and pastel drawing. Before I attached the drawing to the plywood I sanded the wood and then painted it. I wanted to connect the frame with the original drawing that is why I decided to cover the wood with these vibrant and fun flowers. They match the ones featured on the rooster’s hill.

The next art piece I created is a little simpler and not quite as bright. I really wanted the barn owl’s pretty white face to be the focal point of the piece. I painted the frame a color close to the book cover and then added gold glitter to both parts of the art work to give it a little shimmer. I really love the simplicity of this art piece.

The last drawing I tackled was a little challenging. The book cover wasn’t the easiest surface to draw on but I really like how it turned out. I like all the little details in the drawing. Every time you look at it you discover something new. After I painted and stained the plywood I cut out miniature banners using vintage book pages, I then wrote the words in colored pencil and glued them to the board.

You will be able to find my fun new creations in my Etsy shop. Have a great weekend!

Purple Barn Owl on a Vintage Book Page …

Things that make me happy, FRIDAY!!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Friday. It was a crazy day filled with cleaning (yuk), laundry (yuk), playing with the little lady (yeah!), and finishing a new banner to put in my Etsy shop (woo hoo!).

Yesterday while I ate breakfast I created this pretty little bird. It was nice to be able to sit at the table in the sun and create. When I am home with Abbey she usually monopolizes my time and I get very little time to work on art. However, yesterday morning she was quite content to play alone which is unusual for her.

The original drawing was completed in colored pencil, pastel, and pen on a vintage book page. I like this page because it has the name of the library it came from and where the library is. I bought the book at a Salvation Army near my house. I live in Pennsylvania and the library book was from Mississippi. I thought that was kind of neat. (I don’t get out much).

Tonight once the kids are in bed and my husband leaves for his poker game I am going to park myself in front of the TV, put on Bridget Jones’s Diary or a Lifetime Movie pull out my colored pencils and pastels and start a new drawing. I hope your Friday night is a little more lively!

Wide Eyed Owl, art banner …

Things that make me happy, OWLS!

I love painting and drawing owls. I just think they are so beautiful. This adorable owl is modeled after the Northern Saw-whet Owl of North America. At the end of January I borrowed a bird book, well actually more like a bird encyclopedia from the library. I have renewed it three times because I can’t seem to get enough of the beautiful birds inside, especially the owls. The owl this little guy was modeled after is so cute. The owls look like they have huge sunglasses on; their faces are full of so much character.

The original piece was created with colored pencil, pastels, and pen on a vintage book page.

Have a great Night!

Pretty Peacocks ...

Lately I have been creating pieces of art featuring birds. I love painting and drawling vibrant and colorful roosters and owls. Both birds are full of so much personality and I have endless ideas when it comes to creating these feathered friends. On New Year’s Eve we took a trip to a local zoo. They had beautiful
White Swans,

Black Swans,

and Elegant Peacocks.

I have wanted to do some pieces featuring peacocks and this week I finally finished my first three drawings. All three colored pencil and pastel pieces were created on vintage music pages from a hymn book I found at the Salvation Army.

I have a number of ideas for each image. The first project I am working on is a series of multimedia collages mostly made up of recycled materials.

This is the first collage I have created. The peacock image was printed on a recycled brown paper bag. Other materials use in the collage include a recycled cereal box, ticking, vintage book pages, vintage sequins, a doily my mother-in-law was giving away, more recycled brown paper bag, vintage beads and thread that was my great-grandmothers. I also used colored pencil and pastel, gold glitter paint and left over coffee to stain the doily. I am hoping to finish the other two collages this weekend.

I hope your weekend is full of LOVE!

Sunlight ... Please!

I feel like I have been trapped in the house for the last month. If it hasn’t been the beautiful weather keeping the kids home from school it’s been the flu. They were even sweet enough to share the flu with me last week. It was horrible; I wish I could get my energy back. Doing the smallest chore makes me want to crawl into bed and take a nap. Between the next looming winter storm and being exhausted I’m starting to get a little grouchy, ok very grouchy.
This is a sunny, warm, happy, piece of art I created this past week. Think Sunlight!
